Interesting Study Visits

Updated: Sep 18, 2019

We had done 2 study visits in one day. It was awesome and interesting. The first stop that we visit is Lucy Walker Jewellery. It is a beautiful place for people to learn how to make jewelry and a place for them to sale a hand made jewelry. When I walk in the place I realize there are a lot of spacial table at the place and I am curios about that. After Lucy explain to us about that then only I know that it is a special table for all the jewellers. I also saw a loot of tools there. She explain to us that some of the tools's function. She even showed us and explained to us every place in the academy, and I saw some drawing on the wall which is related to jewelry. There jewellery that they make are really nice and beautiful.

The next stop is Jeremy Tok Tailor. We went to visit his work space. It was totally different from the jewellery academy. There have a lot of swing machine and some big table. One is use for discussion and one is use for cutting cloth. They even have a place for them to keep cloths and I realize there are a lot of ruler, nail and some tools that a tailor need.

This two place are totally different and whatever they need also different. So, I have learn that different type of craft have different kind of need. Like the jewellers need a table which suitable for their high and need a table that convenient to them. They will a lot of space to keep all their tools and material. While for tailor, they need a 3 feet width table which allow them to cut cloth easily. I also realize that tailors are always stand while they are cutting cloth and make a measurement for a customer, but a jeweller need to sit down and make their craft. So, we have to understand their needs and try to understand how they work. So, we can make a suitable place for them.

Research - Beadwork

I had done some research based on the craft that I choose. Last week I had showed a beadwork which is a nyonya beaded shoes. This type of baedwork is a more oldest compare to others. Not many people will wearing this type of shoe because it look old, but people still making it because it is an traditional art and craft. Actually there are many type of beadwork and most of them are modern beamwork. This type of beamwork are attracting many people. There is what people learn from the past and useful for future. People try to improve it and make more people accept beadwork.

Here are some modern beanwork but in different type :

1. Bead Stringing - Most straightforward form of beadwork . Stringing beads involves adding beads to any type of thread, cord, elastic, leather, beading wire or similar material.  Stringing beads on beading wire is a great way to make necklaces, bracelets or even earrings.

2. Off-Loom Bead weaving - Done by using a needle and thread and one or more beading stitches. Bead weaving is most often done with small beads called seed beads.

3. Loom Beading - A bead loom is a device used to weave beads into a cloth-like beaded fabric. It can be used to create strips of flat-beadwork or larger sized beaded panels that can be incorporated into purses or used as artwork.

4. Bead Embroidery - Bead embroidery is another type of beadwork where beads are stitched or sewn onto a fabric or backing. Bead embroidery is one of several beadwork techniques favored by Native Americans for embellishing clothing and other items.

This are some of the tools that need for beadwork.

Here are some of the key that they need in a working space:

- Need enough light for them to work (natural light or task light)

- Need a suitable and chair for them to work with (most of the time they are sitting and work)

- Need a storage to keep all the materials and tools
